Umno Youth wants to know why former Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is now silent with regards to former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and former Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin over Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) foreign exchange scandal of the 90s.
In a statement yesterday, Umno Youth deputy chief Khairul Azwan Harun said previously, Anwar had always blamed the forex scandal on the two.
“According to Anwar, Mahathir and Daim were already speculating in the forex trading even before he became Finance Minister,” Khairul Azwan said, demanding to know why Anwar has now changed his mind.
On the current investigation into the scandal, Khairul Azwan said Anwar has instead, reportedly singled out former finance minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop for not disclosing the amount of losses.
“Is he of the opinion that Nor Yakcop had so much power to single handedly oversee all the forex trading?
“Clearly, Anwar’s statements aim to protect his political interests rather than help solve what actually happened in the forex scandal in the 1990s,” Khairul Azwan claimed.
