Umno grassroots believed that the newly formed Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) would be a blessing in disguise, not a threat, to Umno in Sabah.
Gerakan Akar Umbi Umno Malaysia (Gaum) chairman Zulkarnain Mahdar insisted that Warisan, headed by ex-Umno vice president Mohd Shafie Apdal, would not impact Umno’s political strength but would rather serve to erode the support for DAP and PKR.
The reason for his confidence was because most of the leaders of the two opposition parties in Sabah had bid “adious” to join the new party.
The Registrar of Societies had given its approval to rename Parti Pembangunan Warisan Sabah which was formed in 2013 to Parti Warisan Sabah and also its new logo.
In announcing this, Mohd Shafie has said that his party would serve as his platform to take on Umno in Sabah the next 14th General Election (GE14).
However, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Humanities, Arts and Heritage Faculty senior lecturer Zaini Othman said Barisan Nasional should not take lightly the new party.
“It cannot be denied the BN has an excellent track record in Sabah but should not let this to lull it into complacency. The BN must keep staying ahead of the competition,” he said when commenting on the latest political development in the Borneo state.
