Umno and the Barisan Nasional have found the formula to wrest back Selangor from the opposition in the coming general election, said Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.
Opening the simultaneous delegates meeting of all Selangor Umno divisions here today, Najib, who is also Umno president and BN chairman, said the lessons from the BN’s defeat in the state in the 13th General Election (GE13) and big victory in the Sungai Besar parliamentary by-election with a majority of 9,191 votes, provided the formula.
Taking the BN’s defeat in the Sepang parliamentary seat in GE13 as an example, he said the biggest factor contributing to the loss was internal strife in the Sepang Umno division.
“This was evidently clear because the margin of victory was very slim, just 1,100 votes and furthermore, two former leaders of the division stood as independents.
“If we were the count the votes secured by the Independents which by right should have gone to Umno/BN, we would have won in Sepang and not only that, even the spoilt votes would have given us victory, what more if the two were added up (spoilt votes and votes secured by the independents), we would have won comfortably,” he said.
Najib said direct assistance to the public such as the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) which was labelled as ‘dedak’ or animal feed by certain parties had also insulted those in need.
“Do not insult the people, dedak is animal feed.
“We give (BR1M) to help people in need. With it the macro-level economy which consists of micro-sources will also expand.
“The public’s purchasing-power is a part of the national GDP (Gross DomesticProduct), that is why when we draft policies, we will give the best considerations we can,” he explained.
He added that the nation was on the right track on rapid and balanced economic development with the bumiputera agenda a national agenda and that Umno would continue with its struggle to develop the country with renewed spirit.
