PARIS: US President Donald Trump’s history of commenting on women’s appearances got one chapter richer yesterday on the sidelines of his visit to meet French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
“You’re in such good shape,” Trump told the French first lady, Brigitte Macron, who was standing beside Trump’s wife Melania at the time.
Then, appearing to turn to the French president, Trump added, “She’s in such good physical shape – beautiful”.
The comments were audible in live video on Emmanuel Macron’s official Facebook page showing Trump’s arrival at the Elysee Palace.
The statements were the latest in a series of bizarre public comments made by Trump towards women since becoming a presidential candidate.
On June 29, he drew condemnation after tweeting that US television host Mika Brzezinski, whom he called “Crazy Mika”, had visited him at Mar-a-Lago while she was “bleeding badly from a face lift”.
In the same week, he singled out an Irish journalist, Caitriona Perry, during an Oval Office phone call with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar.
“She has a nice smile on her face, so I bet she treats you well,” he told Varadkar on the phone.
During the early days of the race for the Republican presidential nomination, Trump also reportedly made derogatory comments about a female opponent, according to a 2015 Rolling Stone article.”Look at that face!” he said, of Carly Fiorina, the only woman to take part in the Republican Party presidential primaries.
“Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?!” – dpa
