Former Perak MIC Wanita chief, S. Thangeswary is appointed as the new Perak State Legislative Assembly Speaker.
Thangeswary is the first woman to hold the post in Perak, was selected to be Speaker after she garnered 30 votes compared to the 24 obtained by the opposition candidate, Batu Gajah MP V. Sivakumar, while four assemblymen abstained from voting.
The position became vacant after S.K. Devamany stepped down from the post later to be appointed as Deputy Minister in Prime Minister’s department.
Thangeswary’s nomination was made by Saarani Mohamad of Kota Tampan and seconded by Mah Hang Soon of Chenderiang before the start of the second meeting, fourth session of the 13th Perak State Legislative Assembly.
Speaking to MO, MIC vice president and Dewan Negara speaker S Vigneswaran congratulated Thangeswary on her appointment as Perak state assembly speaker.
“I express my heartfelt thanks to Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and Perak Menteri Besar Zambry Abdul Kadir for having the trust on MIC to lead in Perak state assembly.
“These shows Barisan Nasional has gained more trust under Dr Subramaniam’s stewardship.
“It will certainly give a moral support for MIC to do more for the public and carry the good works laid by Barisan Nasional,” he said.
