Prime Minister Najib Razak is confident that Jamilah Anu from Barisan Nasional, who won the Tanjong Datu by-election today, will bring in more progress and continuous development to the constituency.
Commenting on her landslide victory, he said Jamilah was now the best person to continue the legacy left by her late husband Adenan Satem, who was the incumbent and Sarawak’s fifth chief minister.
“Congratulations to BN candidate Puan Sri Jamilah Anu who was elected by the Tanjong Datu voters to be their assemblyman. Long live Barisan!” Najib said via his Facebook and Twitter accounts tonight.
Jamilah defeated two candidates, namely Johnny Aput from the Sarawak Reform Party (STAR) and Rapelson Richard Hamit of Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) Baru in the by-election with a majority of 6,443 votes.
She polled 6,573 votes while Johnny Aput managed only 108 votes and Rapelson just 130 votes. Both her opponents lost their deposits.
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed his thanks to the voters in the constituency for electing Jamilah.
“Tok Nan’s (Adenan) struggle will continue. Thanks to the BN machinery and all quarters who helped to ensure the by-election went smoothly,” he said in his Twitter account.
The by-election was called following the death of the incumbent Adenan, who was also Sarawak’s fifth Chief Minister, due to heart complications on Jan 11. He was 72.
In the last Sarawak state election held on May 11 last year, Adenan had defeated PKR candidate Jazolkipli Numan by a majority of 5,892 votes. He obtained 6,360 votes while Jazolkipli only managed 468 votes. –Bernama
