PETALING JAYA: Speculation is rife that Gelang Patah Member of Parliament Lim Kit Siang will be making a comeback in Penang in the upcoming 14th General Election (GE14).
However, his move is not something new as the DAP advisor previously held the Kampong Kolam seat (1986-1990), Padang Kota seat (1990 – 1995) and also the Tanjong parliamentary seat from 1986 to1999.
Political analyst Datuk Prof Zainal Abidin Borhan pointed out that Kit Siang had also contested in different states such as Selangor and Melaka before securing the Gelang Patah parliamentary seat in the 13th General Election.
He described Kit Siang as a nomadic politician who moves from one place to another for his own political agenda.
“He (Kit Siang) is said to be very sly, only looking at securing wins as he is probably confident of winning with a huge majority in Chinese dominated areas.
“Victory for him will provide him with the bargaining power in Pakatan Harapan,” he said when contacted by Malaysia Outlook.
He explained that bargaining power in Pakatan Harapan will take place if Kit Siang wins and the issue of who holds more power arises.
He opined that should Kit Siang return to Penang, it is because the state is seen as a safe bet for him as he is confident that the state will not fall into the hands of Barisan Nasional (BN).
According to Zainal Abidin, as the majority of the voters in Penang are Chinese, this works in Kit Siang’s favour.
Zainal said that Melaka and Negeri Sembilan are among Kit Siang’s choices if he opts to not contest in Penang.
According to Zainal, Kit Siang is also not afraid to attempt Gelang Patah again as he enjoyed a landslide victory there with over 50,000 votes.
Meanwhile, political analyst Prof Dr Ahmad Atory Hussain said Kit Siang is seen as the attraction to get voters to choose DAP and Pakatan Harapan in the next General Election.
He said that it has always been Pakatan Harapan’s strategy to place figures like Kit Siang to secure votes.
“Kit Siang is seen as invincible and can win votes regardless of the area he is contesting in.
“He will contest in places the Opposition will find it difficult to win as throughout his career in the political arena, he has never lost his (election) deposit,” he added. – MO
