Rio Paralympics gold medallist Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli, 26, has tied the knot with Zafirah Md Nasir, 26, in a simple ceremony held at Taman Casuarina in Nilai last night.
The couple was solemnised by the bride’s father, Md Nasir Abd Wahab, witnessed by family and friends after the Isyak prayers.
NST reported that the groom presented a dowry of RM3,000, RM11,000 in wedding gifts and a gold bracelet to the bride.
“We got to know each other when we were still studying at a private college years ago, before I was accepted the National Sports Council (NSC) to become a full-time athlete,” said Muhammad Ziyad when met after the solemnisation ceremony.
“After I moved to NSC, I tried to find Zafirah again and met her on Facebook. From there, we started to get to know each other better. We decided to get engaged last year on Nov 15,” he said.
Muhammad Ziyad is the current world record holder for the Men’s F20 Shot Put event.
Zafirah timidly admitted that she knew her husband way before he was famous and even then, she was attracted to Muhammad Ziyad’s down to earth and friendly attitude.
“He also respects my parents and that is the most important criteria I look for in a man. My parents too love him and have given their blessing to us since the day they were introduced to Muhammad Ziyad,” she said.
The reception ceremony for the newlyweds will be held tomorrow in Putrajaya as well as another reception on Nov 20 for the groom’s side in Kuala Lumpur.
