Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng must address and resolve all major issues currently affecting Penangites to prove that he was honest and sincere about his “love” for Penang.
In issuing the challenge, Penang Gerakan vice-chairman Oh Tong Keong said Guan Eng must take immediate pro-active steps to save Penang from ruins if he was really true to his words that he loved the state.
Among issues that Oh wanted Guan Eng to urgently resolve were indiscriminate hill cutting, destruction of environment, flood, foreign invasion into George Town heritage zone, exodus of foreign investors from industrial parks and lack of affordable homes, especially low-cost housing for the lower income group.
Unsustainable land reclamation, unscrupulous land sales and surging property prices are also major issues affecting Penangites today, he said.
Other issues are the ever increasing road congestion, lack of parking spaces, collection of parking fees even at late night, on weekends and public holidays, lack of an effective, reliable and affordable public transport system and water tariff hikes.
“Gerakan wish to pose this question to Lim Guan Eng – ‘Do you sincerely and honestly love Penang?’ If yes, resolve all these issues and save Penang first,” insisted Oh.
Press reports recently revealed that currently nine illegal hill development projects were being carried out in Penang and and 14 other hills were being cut down to sizes for various projects approved by the DAP-led state government.
The state government is now investigating five hill development projects due to landslides that occurred recently.
Oh said it was a shock that unscrupulous hill cutting was rampantly taking place in Penang despite the state government giving assurances that it was closely monitoring the situation.
“It shows that the DAP government had not been doing a good job. It has failed in its responsibility,” said Oh.
On the parking collection time, he said the DAP government had broke its own election promise to eliminate collection during late hours, weekends and public holidays.
“Under its rule for past nine years, the DAP government has only brought more problems and destruction to Penang.
“The DAP government has embarked on more populist schemes than constructive policies to benefit Penang and Penangites.
“I wish to advise the state government to resolve the people’s problems and administer the state sincerely and honestly.
“Only then Lim Guan Eng will be qualified to say that he loved Penang,” said Oh.
The DAP has recently launched a “I Love Penang” campaign after Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor proposed for Penang to be made into a federal territory like Kuala Lumpur and Labuan.
