Hate politics shall never be the basis to establish any political party or coalition.
Hence, the current opposition bloc in the country would collapse eventually as it was founded principally based on hatred.
Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein said history showed that political parties that upheld hatred as their foundation would not last long.
“More so if it’s ulterior motive was to cause the downfall of a constitutionally-elected government,” he told newsmen after opening the Umno Kuala Nerus divison delegates’ meeting on Saturday.
Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman was also present.
Hishammuddin said Umno would continue to garner strong support from the public and triumph in the next general election as the party was not based on hate.
Nonetheless the defence minister cautioned Umno members not to underestimate the strength of the opposition bloc.
He reminded Umno leaders that the party remained strong due to its own strength and public support, not because of the chaos and weakening of the opposition.
He said Umno members must stand united against groups such as the newly-set up Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi), led by former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
He said Pribumi may not have received strong public support.
But, he said Umno members must still work hard to strengthen the party and ensure that Barisan Nasional (BN) would continue to be given a strong mandate to rule the country.
Hishammuddin said Umno leaders should never be complacent but continue to reach the grassroots and listen to the needs of the people.
“Don’t wait until we are struck by disaster to only rise up,” he warned, pointing out that the fall of Terengganu government to PAS in the 1999 general election (GE10) should be a good lesson for all Umno and BN members and supporters.
