It’s a joke to suggest that a political kid Pribumi can defeat a battle hardened PAS in the next general election (GE14), a PAS lawmaker has said.
Meru assemblyman Abdul Rani Osman said although Pribumi had influence, how far the fledgling party can go in politics remained to be seen.
“It will be determined in the general election,” he said.
The NST reported yesterday that Abdul Rani had rebuked Pribumi chairman Mahathir Mohamad for being overconfident over his party chances in defeating PAS.
He said PAS was by far a more senior and experienced political party than a novice like Pribumi, despite having some former Umno leaders.
He said it was immaterial for any party to boast about its strength neither to determine who would be the prime minister (PM) or deputy prime minister (DPM).
“What’s more important is to serve the people,” he was quoted as saying.
Abdul Rani claimed that PAS had more political experience than Pribumi and was strong not only in states such as Kelantan and Terengganu, but also Selangor.
Abdul Rani said he felt Mahathir was giving his personal opinion on PAS, and did not reflect the view of Pribumi.
He said if the statement were to reflect Pribumi’s political standing, it should come from the party president Muhyiddin Yassin.
He indicated that Mahathir’s statement showed that he was in conflict with Muhyiddin, who had expressed confidence of wooing PAS to forge a pact with Pribumi to face GE14.
While Muhyiddin has been holding series of talks with PAS leadership to forge the alliance, Mahathir of late has been attacking the Islamist party.
