Police releases 10 held for Bersih, Red Shirt rallies

The police have released ten individuals arrested in a pre-rally sweep in connection to Bersih 5 and Red shirt rallies.

Among the ten released on police bail  are – DAP leaders Ronnie Liu, Jimmy Wong, Lee Khai Meng, Bersih’s Mandeep Singh, student activists Muhamad Luqman Nul Haqim Zul Razali, Anis Syafiqah Md Yusof, Muhamad Safwan Anang, PSM leader S. Arutchelvan, Red Shirt members Hairol Nizam bin Md Nor and Razali bin Zakaria.

Earlier, they were detained under Section 147 of Penal Code for rioting.

However, police picked up PKR vice-president Tian Chua, Perak assemblyman Howard Lee Chuan How, artist Fahmi Reza, political activist Hishamuddin Rais, Bersih rally goer Siew Tech Soon and Red Shirt leader Armand Azha Abu Hanifah in a post rally crackdown on Saturday.

It is expected that Tian Chua will be released later under police bail.

Red shirt’s leader Armand also expected to be released later around 1pm from Dang Wangi police station.

On Saturday, Red Shirts leader Jamal Yunos, Ariffin Abu Bakar aka Ayah Ipin Keramat were remanded four days to assist investigations which took place earlier in Ampang Point.

The case is being investigated under sections 147, 186 and 353 of the Penal Code for rioting, obstructing a public servant in discharge of his public functions, and using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty.

Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah is still detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) and could be held for up to 28 days under Sosma.

Her lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan is believed to file a habeas corpus soon for her release.

Latest release by the police.

As expected around 1210 hrs, Batu MP Tian Chua and Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin have been released by the police.

Along with them Pasir Pinji state assemblyperson Howard Lee, Bersih steering committee member Hishamuddin Rais, artist Fahmi Reza were also released.

Tian Chua tweeted that “Leaving Dang Wangi police station”.
