Prime Minister Najib Razak, will lead Malaysia’s delegation to the 24th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting
(AELM), to be held on Nov 19 and 20 in Lima, Peru.
The Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) in a statement from Putrajaya yesterday said Najib would be accompanied by his wife Rosmah Mansor, International Trade and Industry (MITI) Minister Mustapa Mohamed and senior officials from Wisma Putra, Miti and the Prime Minister’s Office.
“The prime minister will participate in two retreat sessions, themed Challenges to Free Trade and Investment in the Current Global Context; Food Security, Climate Change Adaptation and Access to Water; and Integrating the Asia Pacific: Towards a Real and Functional Connectivity in the Region.
“The first theme will be considered during the first retreat while the latter two themes will be discussed in the second retreat,” Bernama reported as stated in the statement.
Najib is also scheduled to join other APEC leaders for an informal dialogue with the Pacific Alliance and interactive sessions with International Monetary Fund (IMF), Managing Director Christine Lagarde, as well as with Facebook Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg.
“The Prime Minister is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with the prime ministers of Australia and Papua New Guinea to discuss issues of mutual interest,” it said.
According to the statement, the 24th AELM would be chaired by Peruvian President, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.
It would be preceded by the 28th APEC Ministerial Meeting (AMM) which will be held from Nov 17 to 18. This is the second time Peru is playing host to the AELM, having hosted it previously in 2008.
Under the theme “Quality Growth and Human Development : Foundations for Sustainable Growth in the Asia Pacific”, the leaders are expected to discuss the priorities of advancing regional economic integration and quality growth as well as human capital development and ways to strengthen cooperation to foster a future of prosperity and sustainable economic growth for the Asia Pacific region.
The AELM is an annual platform for leaders of APEC economies to discuss, among others, regional economic cooperation and integration, trade, and investment among the APEC economies.
Malaysia has been an active APEC partner and will host the APEC Summit for the second time in 2020. Malaysia hosted the 10th AELM in November 1998.
