KOTA SAMARAHAN: Payments to civil service pensioners increase by RM3 billion each year, according to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun.
He said the age factor (people living longer) and increment of 2 per cent each year for pensioners were the reasons for the increased amount of RM3 billion every year.
Entulu was, however, unable to provide yearly current total payouts to pensioners.
The minister was speaking at a press conference after launching the MalaysiaBiz Portal at the National Institute of Public Administration (Intan) Sarawak here yesterday.
Asked whether there was an increase in the number of civil servants intake, Entulu said the Public Service Department (PSD) was not creating the vacancies but did the recruitment based on the requirements of the Public Service Commission (PSC).
“The PSC identifies who should be taking what post.
“Anyway, the basic government policy now is if it is not a critical post, we don’t recruit, but we also don’t retrench people.
“What we do is when civil servants retire, we look at whether there is any need to get their replacement.
“We are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea here because if we don’t recruit, the opposition will say the government is not helping the unemployed but if we recruit, they will say the civil servants are unproductive,” said Entulu.
He said each year, the number of people graduating from the universities and colleges in Malaysia was between 200,000 and 300,000.
“Actually, the employment part is not a problem in Malaysia in terms of number, but how to get high-income employment,” he said. – Bernama
