A mega rally to support PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s Shariah Bill (pic) will be held by the party at Dataran Merdeka on Feb 18, reported Malay Mail Online.

It also reported that PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man as saying that the party predicted that 300,000 people would attend the rally although organisers said in a statement that the target was to get “as many as possible”.

The official colour for the “Himpunan 355” rally is purple and will run from 3pm to 11pm.

It was also reported that organisers said the goal of the rally was to “increase awareness among Malaysians to support the upgrade of Shariah courts and the implementation of Shariah laws, which they said is guaranteed under the Federal Constitution”.

Other rally organisers include Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia, the Muslim Lawyers Association of Malaysia and Pertubuhan Pembela Islam coalition.

Tuan Ibrahim told a press conference that invitations had been given to all political parties including DAP, Parti Amanah Negara and Barisan Nasional parties.

“We have sent invites to everyone. We involve all parties that love Act 355 without considering political parties, religion or race,” Tuan Ibrahim was quoted as saying.

The Bill that Hadi seeks to amend is Act 355 which refers to Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.

A police permit has been applied by PAS for the gathering to be held at Dataran Merdeka but the party already has an alternative location in mind if the application is rejected.

Abdul Hadi had read his motion for the amended version of his private member’s Bill to amend the Act, allowing punitive powers of the Shariah courts to be expanded, in November last year but deferred it to the next parliament sitting this year.
