The new passenger service charge rates at all airports are expected to be implemented next year Jan 1 says Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai.
Liow who met reporters after a launch at SJK (C) Bandar Sungai Long said his ministry had made some decisions after Macvom presented their proposals to the ministry which later discussed in the Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.
It is understood that the new tax rate for airports are still being discussed and will be announced in due time by the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom).
In early August, Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAS) Chief Executive Officer Peter Bellew has reiterated his call for airport passenger service charges to be the same at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and KLIA2, saying the current charges are totally anti-competitive.
MAS CEO’s idea was backed by International Air Travel Association (IATA).
MAS has been strongly voicing out for a uniform rate between KLIA and KLIA 2.
However, Air Asia CEO Tony Fernandes disagreed with the uniform rate as he believes KLIA 2 is operated as low cost carrier terminal.
