Prime Minister Najib Razak has labelled Mahathir Mohamad a “U-turn champion” after the former prime minister changed his stand on the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M), reported The Star Online.
The news portal quoted Najib as saying that Mahathir had said BR1M was bribery and “wrong in the eyes of the law on Dec 26 last year”.
“Now three weeks later, he has changed his mind and has performed a U-turn. Looking at his recent actions, Dr Mahathir is doing a lot of U-turns.
“He’s a U-turn champion. He is prone to actions that contradict his previous stands,” Najib was quoted as saying to reporters after presenting awards to excellent students and teachers at the UPSR and PT3 levels in Pekan.
It was reported that Mahathir, who is Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman, had said his party would maintain BR1M if they won the next general election.
Mahathir said the cash aid would be retained if it was found to be needed.
However, he added that it would need to be converted into a statutory aid determined by law and the budget.
Najib added that the federal government did not consider BR1M as bribery because similar aids were given by the Penang and Selangor governments.
