Prime Minister Najib Razak congratulated Puskas Award 2016 winner Mohd Faiz Subri today via his Facebook and Twitter account today.
Najib said Mohd Faiz’s achievement would serve as an inspiration to football players in the country.
The Prime Minister said the 29 year-old Penang midfielder’s achievement through his unique free kick, in Zurich on Monday (Tuesday in Malaysia), also made Malaysia proud.
“Congratulations Faiz Subri! Your achievement in #FIFAPuskasAward 2016 will be an inspiration to football players in Malaysia and is a pride to the country,” Najib said.
The Malaysian footballer garnered 59.46% of the votes to pip Brazil’s Johnathan Marlone Azevedo da Silva (22.86%) and Venezuela’s woman player Daniuska Rodriguez (10.01%) to the award, first won by Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.
Mohd Faiz received the award from former Brazilian midfielder sensation Ronaldo.
Mohd Faiz was the architect of what has been described as a physics-defying swerving goal against Pahang in the Malaysian Super League match on Feb 16, 2016, so spectacular that it catapulted him to international recognition.
The Kedah-born footballer also created history by being the first player in Asia to receive the award named after legendary Hungarian player Ferenc Puskas, a striker for Real Madrid in the late 50s and 60s, and player for his own country’s highly successful team in that era.
