Cabinet minister Rahman Dahlan told British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) that “Malaysian Official 1” refers to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.
An interview with BBC, he said it was widely understood that “Malaysian Official 1” is Najib Razak, but it was never officially confirmed.
“I’ve said it openly. Obviously if you read the documents, it is the prime minister,”
“But I have also said, why didn’t the DOJ name him by his proper name. That’s because he is not part of this investigation.
“There have been other people who are named…. and the Department of Justice will take this to the courts and the courts will decide.” he said.
In July, United States Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch announced the filing of civil forfeiture complaints seeking the forfeiture and recovery of more than $1 billion in assets associated with an international conspiracy to launder funds misappropriated from a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund.
The US DOJ filed lawsuits in California yesterday seeks to seize 17 assets seeks to seize 17 assets including luxury properties and a jet, and also named the producers of the blockbuster film ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’.
However, Rahman defended that it’s unnecessary for the prime minister to take responsibility for the fund’s failure
“He has taken responsibility, by putting a new team in place at 1MDB,”
“But just because a few NGOs and the opposition are calling for him to vacate his seat, he shouldn’t do that. That’s too much.” he added.
