It is ridiculous for former Premier Mahathir Mohamad to claim that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was using the 1983 multi-billion BMF scandal report to demonise him, said Communication and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak.
Salleh wrote in his blog posting on Wednesday that the former premier accused the CIA of demonising him due to his repeated critics on United States (US) was totally unacceptable.
“If that is true why the CIA did wait for 34 years to do this?
“They would have done it when he was still the prime minister and not now when he was no longer important to the US,” said Salleh.
He pointed out that the BMF report was just two pages of 13 million pages the CIA declassified and was purely coincidental.
“The CIA did not declassify just these two pages regarding the BMF issue alone.
“Many countries declassify documents that are classified or under the Official Secrets Act after 25, 35, or more, years depending on the sensitivity of those documents.
“Some, of course, remain classified forever,” Salleh stressed.
Mahathir told a press conference today that the foreign press were always attacking him because he had relentlessly criticised the West when he was Malaysia’s prime minister.
The CIA summary report titled – The Bank Bumiputera Scandal: More Trouble Ahead for Malaysia’s Mahathir? – was written in 1985 but released online recently following the intelligence agency’s move to declassify some 13 million pages of various documents.
The BMF scandal witnessed Bank Bumiputera suffering a loss of USD1 billion together with its subsidiary in Hong Kong as the financial institutional was said to have granted bad loans to several Hong Kong property speculators including the Carrian Group.
