On October 28, 2013, pro-Anwar Ibrahim Asia Sentinel already exposed the plot to oust Prime Minister Najib Razak.
That was long before Malaysia Today said the same thing almost 18 months later in early 2015.
The opposition people believe whatever Asia Sentinel says mainly because that site is pro-Pakatan/pro-Anwar while it is anti-Umno/anti-Najib, even at the time when Najib was still just the Deputy Prime Minister and not yet the Prime Minister.
An unhappiness that Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Daim Zainuddin have with Najib is regarding what they consider Najib’s pampering of the Chinese while not giving enough attention to the Malays.
This was what Asia Sentinel said: `Mahathir and Daim Zainuddin, the former finance minister, blamed Najib for reaching out too much to the country’s Chinese and Indian minorities at the cost of votes from Umno’s ethnic Malay base.’
The other point that Malaysia Today made is that Mahathir was sore that his son, Mukhriz, failed to win an Umno vice president’s post, which would have been a springboard for him to become the Umno President and the Malaysian Prime Minister in future.
Mahathir blames Najib for this.
This was what Asia Sentinel said: `Najib and his deputy, Muhyiddin Yassin, were unopposed in the party elections. However, an unofficial “Mahathir slate” developed for other positions. Particularly, Mahathir was pushing to make his son, Mukhriz, the 49-year-old chief minister of Kedah, one of the three vice presidents, which would have been viewed as a springboard to eventually go for the party presidency and premiership. Mukhriz finished fourth.’
So the move to oust Najib already started as early as 2013 and the reason was because Najib did not help Mukhriz win an Umno vice president’s post.
It was then, in 2013, when Mahathir used Bank Negara to sabotage 1MDB’s IPO and block all bank loans that 1MDB needed.
Mahathir needed 1MDB to fail so that he can use that as the excuse to oust Najib.
In December 2014, Mahathir openly made his move against Najib by getting Khairuddin Abu Hassan to lodge a police report against 1MDB.
After that, 1MDB was adopted as the ‘official’ platform to oust Najib.
So it was not the troubles that 1MDB was facing that prompted Mahathir to attack Najib.
Mahathir already wanted to attack Najib much earlier but he first needed a good excuse to do so.
So Mahathir went all out to make sure that 1MDB got into trouble so that he could then use that as the excuse to attack Najib.
Asia Sentinel, the pro-Pakatan/pro-Anwar and anti-Umno/anti-Najib site, revealed this back in 2013 long before Malaysia Today did in early 2015.
Mahathir wants Najib out not because of 1MDB but because he was sore Mukhriz did not become an Umno vice president.
