Parliament speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia has revealed that former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is responsible to weaken the parliamentary institution by abolishing the Parliamentary Services Act.
Pandikar said that during his tenure as prime minister he abolished the act.
It was a response to Mahathir when he spoke about upholding the parliamentary institution and democracy no longer exists in the Parliament.
He said Mahathir abolished the act aimed to separate the powers of the Executive, the Judiciary and the Legislative branches of government.
Mahathir abolished the act in 1992.
On Tuesday, when Mahathir visited the parliament upon an invitation extended by the Opposition said he was saddened by the current state of Parliament.
Mahathir cited during Tunku Abdul Rahman’s tenure all lawmakers were free to speak in Parliament.
Pandikar defended that Parliament has always practised democracy and Opposition lawmakers were given space and time to debate equally.
