Prime Minister Najib Razak fired a salvo against former premier Mahathir Mohamad labeling him as a control-freak leader and a traitor to his former party Umno.
Najib said if there is a conflict of interest or differences in opinion, one should settle it within the party, not by waging personal attacks.
“How can you (Mahathir) plot to form a new party with ill intention to destroy Umno and collapse its leadership?” asked Najib in a state-level Merdeka celebration cum Umno Tasek Gelugor division meeting today.
Najib further pointed out that with the present circumstances he is left with two options.
“Be a puppet prime minister listening to his (Mahathir) advises or statesmen that cares for the people’s welfare.”
“I chose the option to care for the people’s welfare.”
“With my choice, he (Mahathir) started his personal attacks against me like how he did to former Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.” said Najib.
Najib said he is answerable to three million Umno members and he chose the decision not to be Mahathir’s puppet.
“I am not alone, the people is with me. The government knows what are the best policies for the people and I will continue to fight (lawan tetap lawan),” he said.
Meanwhile, Najib urged Umno leaders not to follow the foot-steps of ousted deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin describing him as a man without “principle” and “loyalty”.
“Muhyiddin is a leader who has revealed his true colours…we have witnessed him labeling DAP as a chauvinist party in the past.
“However, today we see him sitting next to Lim Kit Siang.
“Jaga maruah dan nilai diri…Jangan bagi misai kena tanah (Always uphold self-respect and values…Don’t let moustache touch the ground),” he said, adding that Muhyiddin’s relentless attacks against Umno are not based on principles, but rather a political fight based on quest for power and personal agenda.
