The Hong Teik Lion and Dragon Dance Association from Alor Star, Kedah emerged champion at the annual KBJ Lion Dance Championship 2017 at Kompleks Bukit Jambul (KBJ) in Bayan Baru, Penang recently.

Hong Teik lion dance performers’ skill and precise coordination in tune to the drum beat 15 other teams to grab the top prize of RM5,000 in cash, medals and a trophy.

Hong Teik lion dance troupe defeated teams from Penang, Perlis, Kedah, Selangor and Perak to score championship winning 8.95 points.

This is the third consecutive KBJ championship win for the Hong Teik Lion and Dragon Dance Association.

It was a double win for 1st runner-up, Baitiangong Lions Dance Troupe from Selangor winning RM3,000 in cash, medals and a trophy and the title of ‘Best Decoration of Equipment Award’ which carries a cash price of RM888.

The 2nd runner-up Pertubuhan Tarian Singa Dan Naga Hok Wei Kota Sarang Semut Kedah, received RM1,000 cash, in cash, medals and a trophy.

Three outstanding teams with close marks ranging from 8.53 to 8.60 won RM500 cash in cash, medals and a trophy each.

The teams are all from Penang – Persatuan Kebudayaan Dan Kebajikan Hong Teik Pulau Pinang, Pertubuhan Kew Ong Yeah Dragon and Lion Sport Bukit Mertajam and Penang MeiHu Culture and Sports Association.

The ‘Best Costume Award’ won by Penang Xuan Gang Sports Entertainment from Penang, which received a cash price of RM888.

The annual KBJ lion dance competition heralds the arrival of Chinese New Year festival with participating teams showing off their skills to the public.

Shoppers stopped to watch the spectacular display with the lions balancing fearlessly from the high poles.

The KBJ Lion Dance Championship 2017 was supported by the Penang Tourism Development and Culture Department.
