Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamid today gave his assurance that the Indian community will share the fruits of Bagan Datuk’s progress.
Zahid, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bagan Datuk, said the community had contributed much to its development, leading to Bagan Datuk attaining district status in Perak.
“Federal and state leaders, politicians, non-governmental organisations and the Indian community helped build Bagan Datuk to what it is today,” he said when opening the ‘Ponggu Tamil’ celebration in Hutan Melintang.
Despite rain, more than 3,000 people thronged the venue for the event held in conjunction with the World Ponggal Festival. Ponggal is the harvest festival for Indians worldwide.
Zahid added that he hoped the people of Bagan Datuk would continue to live in peace and harmony and put aside any difference so that they could progress together.
On the celebration, he said that he hoped that the Indian community would translate the Ponggal spirit in bringing development to Bagan Datuk besides helping to realise the government’s transformation plans.
“The Indian community here have proven the sons of Bagan Datuk can do as well as other races to progress,” he said.
On Jan 9, Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah declared Bagan Datuk, previously known as Bagan Datoh, as the 12th district in Perak.
