The Act 355 Rally or Himpunan 355 is currently taking place at Padang Merbok in Kuala Lumpur, with many turning up dressed in purple.

On the official Himpunan 355 Facebook page, pictures were shared of rally participants which also included several local celebrities.

Spotted amongst the rally-goers were comedian Wahid Senario and singer Jamal Abdillah, based on pictures posted on Facebook.

Earlier, Muslim rally-goers performed the Zuhur prayer, some at the National Mosque and others at Padang Merbok itself.

In the latest update on the official Facebook page, the scheduled programmes set up as part of the rally is set to begin soon.

Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob previously said the rally will be a combination of a peaceful gathering filled with religious talks, special prayers, Islamic entertainment as well as speeches, amongst others.

The rally, organised by PAS and with the co-operation of various non-govermental organisations (NGO) is aimed at gathering Muslims to show support for a private member’s bill tabled by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 355.

The objective of the amendment is to empower the Syariah courts, specifically in Kelantan.

While the bill has been tabled, it is expected to be debated in the next Parliament sitting.

Previously, PAS said they expected a turnout of 200,000 at the rally, as reported by Bernama.

However Himpunan 355 director Nasrudin Hassan said yesterday that he was confident they could achieve a turnout of more than 50,000.
