George Town an ideal backdrop for movies

Shooting of Tamil thriller Sathuranga Vettai 2 outside a hotel in Tanjung Bungah, George Town recently.

George Town’s heritage mansions, narrow streets, Batu Ferringhi beach, Hindu temples and even the clan jetties at Weld Quay are ideal backdrops for movie scenes.

In 2014, the Tamil movie, Anegan, had several scenes shot in the Pinang Peranakan Mansion in Church Street, the football field at the Penang Free School and at the Sri Ramar Temple in Dobby Ghaut, George Town.

Kollywood’s production of motion pictures in the Tamil language is a film industry based in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Its hub is the Kodambakkam neighbourhood of Chennai, which led to the industry’s nickname Kollywood.

Sathuranga Vettai 2 (Chess Hunt 2) is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language thriller film shot in Malaysia and directed by Nirmal Kumar.

The script is written by H. Vinoth.

Kollywood movie star Arvind Swamy and Trisha are in the lead roles of this film, a sequel to Vinoth’s Sathuranga Vettai (2014).

Arvind was recently in George Town for the shooting of Sathuranga Vettai 2.

Arvind Swamy became a popular actor in the early ’90s with hits like Roja (1992), and Bombay (1995).

Arvind was a 20-year-old actor when he rose to prominence in the Tamil action flick Talapathi (1991) by filmmaker Mani Ratnam.

Talapathi and Roja were box-office hits in India and Malaysia.

Arvind won the Tamil Nadu ‘Best Actor’ award for his role in Roja.

Gamer and tech wizard, Arvind took a long sabbatical to develop software applications and technology related business in the company, he founded called Talent Maximus.

During his hiatus, Arvind was involved in an accident, which left one leg paralysed.

A real life champion, this amazing actor fought to full recovery after five long years and ran a 21km half marathon.

Director Mani Ratnam persuaded his prodigy to return to the big screen in Kadal in 2013.

In 2015, Arvind won the Filmfare award for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for his role in “Tani Oruvan”.

The 46-year old actor said he would be comfortable if people did not recognise him on the streets.

For the Malaysian fans, Arvind is still easily recognisable from his dashing good looks.

A video clip of Arvind walking along Batu Ferringhi beach in a suit posted by a social media consultant under an account name ‘Glamorous Mesh’ on Facebook page raked up over 32,000 views in just two hours.

Arvind was spotted at Penang Road and Four Points Hotel in Tanjung Bungah for an outdoor shoot, later at a nightclub on Lebuh Farquhar for a night scene.

Sathuranga Vettai 2, which is produced by Manobala, began production in October 2016.

The movie is expected for release in July 2017.
