Prime Minister Najib Razak today fired a salvo at Pribumi national chairman Mahathir Mohamad for claiming that Malaysia would lose its sovereignty due to foreign investments.
Dismissing Mahathir’s claims over projects funded by foreign investment such as the Melaka Gateway port city, Najib called on Malaysians to stop listening to such nonsense from the country’s opposition bloc.
Mahathir has claimed that the Melaka Getaway project would surrender the sovereignty of the area to China.
“Sometimes there is no logic behind the claims that because of that project we would lose our sovereignty,” Najib rebuked Mahathir’s attack on Melaka Gateway.
“Since when has foreign investment caused us to lose sovereignty? This has never happened.
“Don’t listen to nonsense from the opposition,” said Najib, assuring that foreign investments have never and will never be at the expense of the nation’s sovereignty.
Addressing a gathering of civil servants in Ayer Keroh, Malacca, Najib said indeed with such foreign investments, Malaysia would benefit by possessing infrastructure that would benefit the people.
“Investors build factories and ports in our country and this means, the ports will be in our hands, controlled by us. We will not lose sovereignty. We will always defend our sovereignty,” said Najib.
Dr Mahathir has recently shifted focus towards the RM43 billion Melaka Gateway project, claiming it was another sign of the federal government surrendering the nation’s sovereignty, particularly the freehold status of property under that project.
