Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi Chuan Aun was arrested later released on police bail by George Town City police today.

Jeff Ooi arrived at the city police headquarters at about 2.45 pm today to have his statement recorded pertaining to his controversial tweet made on the demise of PAS spiritual leader Haron Din last week.

He was detained upon his arrival and was seen walking out the headqaurters at 6.30pm after been allowed police bail.

He is being probed under Section 298 of the Penal Code for causing disharmony, disunity and prejudicing the maintenance of harmony or unity, on the grounds of religion.

Dressed in a black suit, the DAP lawmaker, accompanied by his lawyer R.S.N. Rayer, waved and smiled to press members when he arrived at the police headquarters in Jalan Patani after lunch hour.

Yesterday Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar had urged Jeff Ooi to surrender voluntarily to facilitate police investigations.

Jeff Ooi in his tweet last Friday, remarked “Adios Haron Din”. “Let there be peace”, which led an uproar among many Malaysians, who slammed the DAP lawmaker of being “insensitive” and “racial” against Haron’ family and Muslims in general.

Penang Chief Minister  Lim Guan Eng, also the DAP secretary-general, has distanced his party from Jeff Ooi’s  statement.

“Jeff Ooi made the statement at his own accord. This has got nothing to do with our party.” Guan Eng said last Saturday.

Five police reports were lodged against him in Penang and also in other states.

Haron Din, 76, passed away last Thursday and was buried on Friday in the United States.
