Former Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins says Jose Mourinho needed to recall Michael Carrick to bolster United midfield.
After defeat at Chelsea, United now face Manchester City in the EFL Cup tomorrow.
He’s got to make changes. I would love to see Carrick in midfield. He’s the one player United have who can control a game from the middle of the field,” said Wilkins, the former United captain.
He said he does not see Ander Herrera or Marouane Fellaini controlling a game in the middle of the park.
“I thought Herrera was very good at Liverpool but that was more from a defensive perspective.
“I certainly don’t see Fellaini being able to control a game. Fellaini for me is someone who can go forward and get a goal because of his sheer physical presence. I think they need someone in there controlling the game and Carrick is the guy for me.
“I don’t think that Jose actually knows what is his best XI is. They have to start improving. The goals they conceded at Chelsea were very poor.
We talk about parking a bus but you could have driven a bus through United’s defence for three of the four goals. They are not performing and it is going to take awhile for Jose to turn it round as well.”
