BR1M not to fish for votes – Mohamad Hasan

 |Jan 18, 2017

The 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) is not meant for vote-buying but to ensure that the cash assistance by the government will go straight to the deserving people, said Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Mohamad Hasan.

He said the open-aid system or subsidies which were previously practiced did not achieve the desired targets as rich people enjoyed more than the people who were really in need.

“For instance, the petrol subsidy…We helped (the people) but those who benefited more were the rich people, not the poor.

“We had never conducted studies on the subsidy system since independence…It did not achieve the desired results. People are so comfortable with subsidies, so when (the system) changed, people will react differently.

“This has nothing to do with fishing for votes. We will continue giving out BR1M even in years with no general elections. In fact, we add more each year,” he said in his speech at a Bank Islam Housing Aid Project handing over ceremony.

Also present were Bank Islam managing director Zukri Samat; State Mufti Mohd Yusof Ahmad; Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia chairman Zubir Harun; and State Welfare, Women and Family Development Committee chairman Norhayati Omar.
