Two Royal Malaysian Air Force pilots were found dead today in a swamp forest in Chukai, Kemaman, Terengganu, after the Hawk 108 fighter jet they were flying went missing minutes after taking off from the airbase here.

They have been identified as Major Hasri Zahari, 31, and Major Yazmi Mohamed Yusof, 39.

Chief of Air Force Affendi Buang told a press conference that the bodies were found with the parachutes still attached to them.

The aircraft had taken off from the Kuantan airbase at 11am and contact was lost 30 minutes later.

The fighter jet had yet to be found five hours after it went missing, Affendi said.

Affendi said the RMAF had temporarily grounded the Hawk 108 fighter jets pending an investigation into the tragedy.

He also said that the RMAF had set up a special investigation body to probe the accident.

“The two pilots are from the No. 6 Squadron at the Labuan RMAF base and had 13 and 19 years of experience, respectively, with the RMAF,” he added. – Bernama
