Bank Negara forex scandal – Anwar seems can’t speak straight

Apr 28, 2017
Salleh Said Keruak said that Anwar Ibrahim changed his story every time on the Bank Negara forex scandal.

One wonders when will ever Anwar Ibrahim speak “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth”

On the Bank Negara forex scandal that happened under former Premier Mahathir Mohamad’s watch in the early 1990s, Anwar seems can’t speak straight – he keeps changing his story each time.

Anwar’s flip-flop has prompted Salleh Said Keruak to fire a broadside at the former deputy prime minister and finance minister for adding a latest twist to his forex tale.

Salleh said Anwar’s press statement on Wednesday appeared to have tailored for the current political situation he had found himself in.

“When he is with Mahathir Mohamad, Anwar says one thing.

“When he is opposed to Mahathir, he says something else.

“And now that he is, again, with Mahathir, Anwar adds a new twist to the story.

“Now Anwar says something else and blames just (then Bank Negara advisor in charge of investment department) Nor Mohamed Yakcop,” said Salleh, the Umno treasurer-general and, communications and multimedia minister, in his latest blog posting.

Salleh recalled that in 1993, Anwar denied Bank Negara had lost money playing the forex market in response to a question that Lim Kit Siang raised in Parliament, which one can check in the Parliament Hansard.

In 1994, he said Anwar told Parliament that it was a small loss and only a “paper loss”.

Anwar also blamed the Bank Negara governor for it and said the governor had been asked to resign.

But, recalled Salleh, Anwar changed his story at a forum in Penang in 2012,

Salleh said the forum was told that the loss was US$10 billion, and three people were blamed for it – Daim Zainuddin and Mahathir included.

“This is why there is a need to further probe this matter. If the truth had been revealed 24 years ago we would not still be investigating the matter today,” said Salleh in reference to the federal task force investigating the Bank Negara’s forex losses.
