EC: Check polling info at least a week before GE14 for changes

KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Academy of the Election Commission (EC) yesterday advised voters to check their polling details at least one week before polling day of the 14th general election (GE14) to avoid any problems with regard to their polling stations.

Its strategic management programme head, Khadijah Ishak, said the problems anticipated included a change of the polling station, specifically for those who had changed their home address.

She said that if the redelineation of electoral boundaries was passed by the Dewan Rakyat and applied in GE14, there could be changes in the polling stations for some voters.

“For instance, a person who voted in School A previously may have to vote in School B or School C if the new electoral boundaries are applied. So, he or she cannot expect to vote in School A this time.

“That is why a check must be made. That is the responsibility of the voter himself or herself to make it easy for him or her on polling day,” she told Bernama after appearing as a guest on the “Nine11” programme on Bernama News Channel here yesterday.

Khadijah said the EC had checklists at the polling stations but voters could only check on their polling streams, not the electoral roll.

She said the checks could be done through the My SPR Semak mobile application, by ringing 03-88927018, at any state election office, or at the EC’s official portal.

Voters can also do it via SMS by typing SPR followed by the identity card number and sending the SMS to 15888.

Khadijah said EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah would launch a campaign to check the electoral roll at Universiti Malaysia Perlis on Wednesday to enhance public awareness on the responsibility to exercise the voting right.

“The main objective of the campaign is to increase public awareness of the importance of voting and to achieve the 85 per cent voter turnout target for GE14,” she said.

As of the fourth quarter of 2017, the EC had recorded 14,968,304 registered voters. – Bernama
