JOHOR BAHRU: Nine soldiers who had been remanded to facilitate investigations into the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in Kluang in mid-December, were released on police bail yesterday.

Kluang police chief ACP Mohamad Laham said the suspects, aged 19 to 24, were granted police bail, pending chemistry and DNA reports.

“As the suspects are civil servants, the investigation papers must also be referred to Bukit Aman’s D5 (prosecution and legal) division and the deputy public prosecutor’s office for further instructions,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

The soldiers were remanded on Feb 23.

The suspects, who are army personnel from the Mahkota Camp, Kluang, were arrested after the victim lodged a report at the Kluang police station last Thursday.

It is understood that one of the suspects was the girl’s boyfriend and the victim is now nine weeks pregnant. – Bernama
