PASIR SALAK: The Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry has acknowledged the possibility of fund leakages through annual grants given to farmers.

Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said if there was misappropriation of funds through the exploitation of the grants, the ministry was ready to take action against the errant contractors.

He said, however, investigations had revealed that the leakages were not as serious as reported.

“The allegations (in a newspaper report) did not refer to any specific case. If there is (leakage), we are ready to take action.

“But overall, I’m confident it is not the case. Like any other organisation, leakages do exist. But there are not that many complaints received over the matter,” he told a press conference after officiating the Peladang Jaya Carnival which was thronged by about 5,000 visitors at the Kampung Gajah National Farmers’ Organisation office here yesterday.

Recently, a local newspaper revealed that millions of Ringgit in grant assistance were leaked each year, as some contractors were found to have spiked the prices of agricultural items supplied to eligible farmers by up to 30 per cent. — Bernama
