KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth yesterday proposed that the posts of party president and deputy president be uncontested in the coming party elections.

Khairy Jamaluddin said Umno Youth gave its fullest support to party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak and vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is carrying out the duties of deputy president, to continue helming the party.

When delivering his policy speech at the Umno Youth assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre yesterday, Khairy said the party’s priority now would be the 14th General Election (GE14), not the party elections, Bernama reported.

“Let us go into the battlefield with a calm heart and a clear mind. Do not be weighed down by questions on who to support later. So, we settle the question today, and let us no longer be bothered by it.

“With that, Umno Youth wants to propose that when we do win the general election, God willing, the positions of both president and deputy president will be uncontested,” said Khairy, who is also youth and sports minister.

“Throw out any uncertainties and insecurities, and now let’s focus on delivering a big victory for BN.”

Khairy also highlighted the importance of solidarity among Umno members by ensuring no more divisions in the party.

He also told members not to take lightly the challenge posed by “that Umno splinter party”.

“Though we are certain that Umno is stronger, Umno is greater, do not forget that this ‘flower’ party will still dip from the same pool of supporters,” he said.

Khairy added that those not chosen as candidates for GE14 should continue to struggle for the party to ensure victory in the elections.

“Do not trade your dignity and self-worth, and do not place importance on your personal agenda to the extent that Umno crumbles and falls.”

According to The Star, Umno’s two other wings have also backed their support for this.

Wanita Umno chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the two top posts should not be contested for the sake of party unity, stability and consensus.

“To our president, whose spirit is strong and determined, do know that our loyalty to you and the party is undivided.

“To Ahmad Zahid, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and party leadership, I hereby declare the movement’s commitment and support to ensure that Umno remains strong to serve the people and face challenges that come our way,” she said.

Puteri chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said since Najib and Ahmad Zahid make a good team, they should be allowed to continue leading the country and party.

“That’s why this movement is proposing that the top two positions in Umno not be contested.

“They should be given the opportunity to continue working together to strengthen not only the party, but also our country,” said Mas Ermieyati.
