DUNGUN: The Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry is finalising details before channellng aid to farmers affected by the floods in Penang and Kedah recently.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the aid would be channeled according to the level of losses and destruction faced by the farmers.
“Our staff have already gone on the ground and made estimations and we are finalising the details before channeling the aid as we are worried the disaster is not over yet because it is understood there is a second and third waves.
“However we are constantly alert on the matter and assistance will be given, especially to padi farmers,” he said when speaking to reporters after attending the Agrobank friendly gathering with residents of Bandar Ketengah Jaya today.
Also present was Agrobank chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Zabidi Zainal.
Recently the ministry has announced an allocation of RM9.3 million as replanting assistance to 5,941 affected farmers involving about 10,516 hectares of padi fields in Penang and Kedah.
Out of that total, 5,547 farmers are in Penang involving a total acreage of 9,680 hecatres and 394 farmers (835 hectares) in Kedah.
Asked about the fate of fishermen in the states who could not venture out to sea, Shabery said fishermen would also receive aid if the assessment being conducted revealed they were eligible due to the disaster. –Bernama
