KUALA LUMPUR: Pat Perez from the United States completed a stunning victory at the US$7 million (about RM29.50 million) CIMB Classic by closing with a three-under-par 69 to win by four shots at the TPC Kuala Lumpur in Bukit Kiara, here today.

It was the American’s third victory in the PGA Tour after claiming his first title at the 2009 Bob Hope Classic and the OHL Classic in Mexico last November.

With a total of 24-under-par 264, Perez received the championship trophy from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and pocketed US$1.26 million (about RM5.32 million) for his feat and besides having a big slice of the total purse, Perez also earned 500 FedEx Cup points.

Perez said he had no plans to change his goals, his lifestyle or even his ‘bad diet’ despite earning a whopping RM5.32 million.

“I’m not going to change anything. I’m still not going to work out. I’ll still have a bad diet and I’m going to enjoy myself…I’m really not going to change anything. I’m going to work hard and I’m just going to — I’m just taking it a day at a time, I really am. That’s all I’m doing,” he quipped.

In the final round at the TPC Kuala Lumpur, Perez fired three consecutive birdies from the second hole before dropping a bogey at sixth but later recovered with another birdie at the eighth, while in his second-nine the 41-year-old parred the rest to maintain his lead.

Perez overcame compatriot Keegan Bradley who trailed by four strokes after carding 20-under-par 268.

“I played well enough to win this week, but Pat Perez was playing exceptionally well, so happy for him…I just love the course. It’s fun to play. Par fives are fun, you make a lot of birdies and eagles, so it’s a great tournament,” said Bradley, who is delighted with his third top-10 at the CIMB Classic.

The 2016/2017 PGA Tour Best Rookie Player, Xander Schauffele shared third spot with South Korean Kang Sung-hoon with identical 17-under-par 271 scores. –Bernama
