GEORGE TOWN: Penang MCA is willing to work with the DAP-led state government to resolve the frequent flash flood problem for the sake of Penangites.

State MCA secretary Tang Heap Seng said the party was willing to provide its expertise to resolve the flood issue which occurred twice in two weeks, of late.

He said the party had never been invited to attend any flood and mitigation meeting held by the state government.

“We have many experienced engineers in the party, so if invited, we are willing to provide our views and the solution,” he told reporters, here, today.

On Sept 15, more than 100 areas in all five districts of Penang were flooded after heavy rain for more than five hours and flash floods happened again last Thursday.

However, Tang said the state government should reconsider its decision to proceed with the Transport Master Plan before solving the flood problem.

He said the RM305 million spent on the feasibility and design studies related to the undersea tunnel and three highway projects, should have been used for flood mitigation projects.

“A flood mitigation master plan is much needed by the people now compared to other projects,” he said.

He also suggested that the state government look into providing additional on-site detention ponds to help collect rainfall.

“It is important to require an on-site detention pond be constructed first before the over-exposure of land, especially from hill development,” he said.

Tang said if the state government really wanted slope development, it was also important that a proper drainage system be constructed prior to any development project. – Bernama
