KUALA LUMPUR: Tunku Mahmud Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah is set to ascend the throne as the 28th Sultan of Kedah following the death of his elder brother Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.
Tuanku Abdul Halim, the state’s 27th Sultan who ruled since 1958, died yesterday at the age of 89.
The ninth of 14 siblings, Tunku Mahmud Sallehuddin was proclaimed as Raja Muda Kedah (heir apparent) in December last year.
He is married to Puan Sri Tengku Maliha Tengku Ariff and they both have two sons; Tengku Sarafuddin Badlishah and Tengku Datuk Shazuddin Badlishah.
The proclamation of Tunku Mahmud Sallehuddin, 75, as the Sultan of Kedah was read out by Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah at Istana Anak Bukit in Alor Setar, as reported by The Sun Daily.
Son of Sultan Badlishah Abdul Hamid Halim Shah and Sultanah Asma, Tunku Mahmud Sallehuddin was born on April 30, 1942 in Alor Setar.
In the 60s, Tunku Mahmud Sallehuddin was stationed with the 12th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment in Kelantan, bearing the rank of lieutenant, and later promoted to colonel. – MO
