KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia clinched its second and third gold medals at the 29th SEA Games today through the women’s and men’s team compound archery events.
The Malaysian women’s team bagged the gold after defeating Vietnam, 253-252 in a thrilling contest at the National Sports Council’s field in Bukit Jalil here.
Indonesia had earlier beaten Thailand for the bronze.
The Malaysian men compound archers later added another gold by beating Singapore 228-222.
The Philippines clinched the bronze after beating Vietnam.
Yesterday, Malaysia fired up their ambition to wrest the overall title with an early strike, snatching the first gold medal of the Games in the chinlone linking event as expected, and a silver from archer Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki who missed the title by a point to his Indonesian rival.
In the bag are also two bronze medals, one from woman archer Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh who was halted in the semifinals from defending the compound gold she won in Singapore in 2015, and the other from the chinlone same stroke team event.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak took to Twitter yesterday to congratulate the national chinlone team.
“First gold! Congratulations chinlone squad! #BangkitBersama #KL2017 #Negaraku #Kebanggaanku,” Najib said on his official Twitter account @najibrazak. – Bernama
