KUALA LUMPUR: Questions posed by reporters about his place of birth initially raised by Pertubuhan Minda Sosial Prihatin (PMSP) president Ramesh Rao left DAP leader Lim Kit Siang visibly upset.
Not only did he not answer reporters’ questions on the issue, reporters were also given a lecture on journalism ethics by Lim as he said he was also once a journalist.
He also told the reporter to “do your homework ” first before posing such questions, as reported by the New Straits Times.
“I was a reporter before and if the story is trash, I will investigate first. So investigate before posing the question, otherwise it will reflect on you and your newspaper.
“I don’t want to answer the question because I think the reporters should go through the stacks. Be prepared to do basic check. Reporters should go through a test.
“Not only politicians must go through a test, reporters must go through a test too. Ok thank you,” he was quoted as saying during a press conference at the Dewan Rakyat today.
Yesterday, Ramesh asked Lim to clarify whether he was born or had arrived in Malaysia, claiming that Lim’s information on his Wikipedia page was recently edited.
According to Ramesh, a few weeks ago Lim’s Wikipedia page stated that he had arrived in Malaya in 1957 but that information was removed 12 days ago.
Checks on the Internet found that Lim’s birthplace is listed as Batu Pahat.
However on his Wikipedia page, while it no longer states that he arrived in Malaya in 1957, as per Ramesh’s allegation, it says the DAP adviser was born in a province in China.
It is believed that yet another update was made today, and his birthplace now says Batu Pahat.
It deserves a mention that Internet users can edit information on Wikipedia. Former Pasir Mas member of Parliament Datuk Ibrahim Ali once had his Wikipedia page describe him as a comedian. – MO
