While expressing their appreciation on the role played by Mahathir Mohamad by joining the ‘reformasi movement’ to bring down Barisan Nasional (BN), PKR Youth today said they hoped the former Premier would give his commitment to not offer himself either as a candidate for the upcoming general election, or as a candidate for Prime Minister.
In saying this, PKR Youth deputy chief Afif Bahardin said they believe this move would inject spirit and garner the public’s support in realising the ‘reformasi’ agenda.
This would also open up opportunities for more energetic and charismatic younger leaders to rise, with the guidance and advice from Mahathir as well as former Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
“Mahathir’s role as former Prime Minister and a statesman surely is able to advice and guide Pakatan Harapan to win the next General Election and form a ‘reformasi government’ in Putrajaya,” Afif said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, Afif said PKR Youth was saddened by Anwar’s decision to not offer himself as the Opposition’s candidate for Prime Minister.
“We respect his decision and this shows how big-hearted he is by putting the rakyat’s interest and the ‘reformasi’ agenda first,” Afif said.
