Opposition leader Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said it is up to the Islamist party PAS if it intends to contest in seats won by PKR in GE13.
“If they want to contest, contest lah. What can I do if PAS wants to contest?” said the Permatang Pauh MP to newsmen after chairing the Pakatan presidential council meeting in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
However, Wan Azizah reminded PAS that the sole objective of the opposition should be to overthrow the kleptocratic government.
“If there is one goal, it is to overthrow Barisan Nasional and Umno in the 14th general election (GE14)” the PKR president said.
The press conference was attended by Parti Pribumi chairman Mahathir Mohamad, its president Muhyiddin Yassin, DAP national chairman Tan Kok Wai and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.
The PAS central committee had yesterday approved a motion to cut political ties with PKR, FMT reported.
PKR has been accused of working together with Amanah and DAP and was seen to be against PAS in opposing a motion brought by Abdul Hadi Awang to amend the Sharia Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act.
PAS also passed a motion urging the party leadership to consider fielding candidates in all the PKR seats, thus ensuring three-cornered contests, a situation said to be favourable to the BN.
The final decision on the motion passed by the PAS muktamar will be decided by the PAS’ shura council, the party’s highest decision-making body.
