Woman pleads not guilty to causing death of police officer and wife

An unemployed woman pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of drugs and causing the death of a police officer and his wife at the Baling Magistrate’s Court in Kedah today.

Yeoh Chiew Fern, 36, was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicating drugs and causing the death of Baling Narcotic Criminal Investigation Department head Mohd Noor Mat Yaub, 38, and his wife, Suriya Ab Rahman, 37,  in Kampung Telok Teduri, Jalan Baru Kupang-Baling at 7.15 am on April 18 this year.

She made the plea after the charge was read to her before Magistrate Mohd Izmi Ibrahim.

The charge, under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, provides an imprisonment of up to 10 years and fine of between RM8,000 and RM20,000, if found guilty.

Prosecution officer Inspector Harlina Othman did not offer bail.

However, the court set bail at RM8,000 in one surety and also ordered for Yeoh’s driving licence to be suspended pending the disposal of the case.

The court fixed May 30 for the case mention and to allow Yeoh to engage a lawyer and for submission of documents.
