The opposition’s pledge to set up Sabah’s very own education ministry is mere fantasy, says Sabah Assistant Finance Minister, Ramlee Marahaban.

The Bugaya assemblyman said the reality was that operating such a ministry needed an annual allocation of between RM7 billion and RM10 billion.

“We should look at the factor of the state’s affordability, our revenue (petroleum and palm oil royalties) is not that much.

“The state budget is about RM4 billion and this amount has to be shared with the various ministries,” he told reporters after opening an entrepreneur carnival organised by Mara, with the cooperation of the Semporna district office in Sabah today.

Ramlee said apart from the financial constraints, the opposition should also look at the matter which was against the national education policy.

“All this while, education has been under the jurisdiction of the federal government, and state governments have been getting the due cooperation on education development,” he added. – Bernama
