Lim Kit Siang targets Mahathir as DAP’s Malay face

 |Mar 22, 2017
Lim Kit Siang is angry with Annuar Musa for labelling him as the father of all racists.

“Today, I challenge him to sue me for labelling him as the father of all racists. If he is brave, he can sue me; whether he sues me or I sue him. What he did was a disgrace to Islam,” Lim Kit Siang told reporters at the Malim Nawar DAP Service Centre on Monday.

Kit Siang was upset that Annuar Musa had called him “a racist, anti-Islam and dictator” the day before that, which was why he lashed out.

Actually, for more than 30 years, Mahathir Mohamad has been calling Kit Siang a racist and a dictator.

Mahathir also accused Kit Siang of being one of those who caused the May 13 race riots in 1969.

All you need to do is Google or search YouTube to see the evidence of this.

On the other hand, Kit Siang, too, for years has been accusing Mahathir of being a racist and a tyrant.

When Kit Siang talks about Mahathir he uses ‘failed state’, ‘police state’, ‘draconian’, ‘hegemony’, ‘kleptocracy’, and so on, in the same sentence.

Kit Siang also whacked Mahathir for holding on to power for so long and for refusing to resign.

Kit Siang used to compare Mahathir to Idi Amin and Mugabe.

It is puzzling why Kit Siang is getting a heart attack over Annuar Musa.

He and Mahathir have been saying worse things about each other for decades.

Over 32 years, from 1981 to 2013, Mahathir and Kit Siang have never had a nice thing to say about one another.

In fact, Kit Siang promised Malaysians that if the opposition ever came to power, Mahathir would be arrested and made sure of spending the rest of his life in jail.

It was Kit Siang who in 1993 revealed in Parliament that Bank Negara had lost billions of ringgit gambling in the forex market.

If not, Malaysians would not have known about it.

In 1994, Kit Siang told Parliament that the government had lied and asked for all those involved to resign from their posts and take responsibility for Bank Negara’s huge forex losses that were estimated at about US$10 billion.

In short, Kit Siang called Mahathir a crook and a thief plus, of course, a racist, a tyrant, a murderer, and much more.

Isn’t Annuar stating facts?

So why is Kit Siang foaming at the mouth regarding a minor thing like what Annuar said?

After all, is not what Annuar said the truth?

Does Kit Siang not oppose Article 153 and the Sharia (in particular the Sharia Amendment Bill a.k.a. Act 355), etc?

Annuar was just stating facts that most Malaysians already knew and have known for 51 years.

While Kit Siang whacks Mahathir for holding on to power for 22 years, and called him a dictator and a tyrant because of that, has Kit Siang himself not held on to power for 51 years?

For more than 30 years since the 1980s, we have seen many DAP leaders resign from the party.

They all said they resigned because DAP was not really a democratic party and Kit Siang was a dictator.

After 20 or 30 years, they could no longer take it so they resigned.

This is DAP people saying that, not one DAP person but hundreds over 30 years have been saying that.

So, Kit Siang is so upset he wants to take Annuar to court.

But Kit Siang refuses to take Mahathir to court in spite of the worse things Mahathir has said about him, and vice versa.

Kit Siang refuses to sue those hundreds of DAP leaders who have resigned from the party and have called him a dictator and labelled DAP an undemocratic party for more than 30 years.

Being called a racist, and DAP being called an undemocratic party, for more than 30 years has never upset Kit Siang before this.

That is because DAP never cared about the Malay votes before this.

The Malay face

So why get upset if you are called a racist?

All DAP was interested in were the Chinese votes.

As long as they got the Chinese votes nothing else matters.

DAP’s main objective was to win Penang.

It felt that Penang was the only state (or island-state) that the Chinese can rule.

With PAP in Singapore and DAP in Penang, that was all that matters.

That would mean the Chinese would control the two main Chinese-heartlands outside China and Taiwan and the Malays can take the rest of Malaysia as far as DAP and PAP were concerned.

Now, however, DAP has set its sights higher.

They now realise they can actually control the whole of Malaysia but it cannot be with just the Chinese votes.

With just the Chinese votes, the best DAP can hope is to remain in the opposition with 50 or so seats.

To take over the country, the party needs at least 120 seats to be safe and that would mean the additional seats must come from the non-Chinese.

Lim Kit Siang knows that DAP desperately needed the Malay votes to capture Putrajaya in GE14.

That is why Pakatan Harapan must no longer be seen as a DAP-led or DAP-dominated opposition coalition.

In 2008 and 2013 that did not matter too much.

While DAP talked to the Chinese voters, PAS and PKR talked to the Malay voters.

So they were able to get the support of all the races.

Today, however, the scenario has changed.

PAS is no longer with the opposition coalition.

Pribumi and Amanah, on the other hand, cannot seem to get the Malay support.

So now the DAP needs Pakatan Harapan to be seen as more Malay to be able to win over the Malay voters.

That is why Kit Siang wanted Mahathir’s Pribumi to join Pakatan Harapan.

Furthermore, with ‘Mahathir the Tyrant’ leading Pakatan Harapan, that would overshadow ‘Kit Siang the Dictator’.

That would deflect the criticism on Kit Siang since the spotlight would now be on Mahathir.

Mahathir, however, refuses to join the coalition unless it is legally registered.

If it is a loose coalition like in 1999, 2008 and 2013, then the issue of who the prime minister-in-waiting is can be kept unsaid.

Mahathir does not agree to that.

He wants the prime minister-in-waiting to be stated before the election.

Furthermore, with a legally-registered coalition having its own flag and logo, everyone would contest under a common identity and the various weaknesses of PKR, DAP, Amanah and Pribumi can be hidden.

To Kit Siang, he has nothing to lose with this.

As long as he becomes the deputy prime minister (DPM) and finance minister that is all that matters.

The PM is always going to be Malay anyway as far as Kit Siang was concerned.

One Malay is as good as another so long the posts of DPM and finance minister goes to him.

DAP going to run Putrajaya

Kit Siang’s freudian slip was when he told the Malays that DAP will look after the Malays if the party came to power.

This is exactly what Lee Kuan Yew told the Malay voters in 1965.

But why DAP?

Is DAP or Pakatan Harapan going to be the one running Malaysia?

So, if Pakatan Harapan is the one that is going to run Malaysia why is DAP guaranteeing the Malays they will be looked after?

That is precisely the point.

Pakatan Harapan means DAP. DAP decides what Pakatan Harapan does.

That is the message DAP was sending to Malaysians.

So now DAP needs to do damage control by projecting Mahathir as the real leader of Pakatan Harapan, meaning that Pakatan Harapan was not DAP-dominated or Chinese-dominated but has a Malay face.

That was why Kit Siang went berserk when Annuar called him a racist.

In the past, for more than 50 years, he did not care because DAP’s audience was just the Chinese voters.

Today that has changed.

Lim Kit Siang (right) aims to use Mahathir to give a Malay-friendly image on DAP.

DAP needs to show a more Malay-friendly image and with Mahathir as DAP’s Malay face that was supposed to help Pakatan Harapan increase its seats from just 70 to, it hoped, at least 120.

With the recent spate of resignations, Kit Siang is also sensitive about being called a dictator.

But then what do you call someone who has held on to power for 51 years and who has sacked or pushed out hundreds of DAP leaders for more than 30 years since the 1980s?

Anyway, it was Mahathir who kept repeating that Kit Siang was a racist and a dictator and one of those who caused May 13.

So if Kit Siang is unhappy about that then go sue Mahathir since Mahathir has never withdrawn his allegation or apologised for calling him a racist and a dictator.

Does Kit Siang still want to arrest Mahathir and throw him in jail for the rest of his life if Pakatan Harapan comes to power like what Kit Siang promised us?

If not then Kit Siang has to tell the voters that he and DAP have granted Mahathir amnesty from all his crimes. – Malaysia Today
