Yellow Shirts waiting outside Kota Marudu police station in Sabah after their leader Maria Chin Abdullah was arrested on Saturday, October 29, 2016.

Bersih leader Maria Chin Abdullah was detained and released on police bail several hours later in Kota Marudu, Sabah on Saturday.

Kota Marudu OCPD Supt Izaan Abdullah said Maria was released on police bail at about 4.15pm after they recorded her statement and completed investigation.

Maria was arrested when distributing leaflets at Langkon, about 90km from Kota Kinabalu.

It was reported that the convoy was heading towards to Kota Marudu from Kudat when it was stopped at Langkon

Maria Chin was investigated under Section 11 of the Printing and Publications Act 1984 at about 1.45pm.

Sabah Bersih chief Beverly Joeman claimed that the Yellow Shirt political movement was puzzled with police actions.

Section 11 refers to printed materials like leaflets that have the name of the publisher.

“In our case, Bersih was clearly stated as the publisher of the leaflets that were distributed,” said Beverly.

Beverly said the Yellow Shirts were puzzled by the actions of some policemen requesting identity cards of individuals, who accepted the Bersih leaflets.

She said this was the first time that the police stopped the Yellow Shirt convoy, adding that this was the fifth event held in Sabah by Bersih this year.
