An old folks home operator was fined RM 4,000 for hurting an inmate and operating the centre without a valid permit.
Sehgar, 56, who operated the All Mighty Old Folks Home in Klabang, Melaka, was charged at magistrates court today.
He pleaded guilty to both the charges.
His first charge was causing hurt on Wong Yoke Chan, 75, with his hands at the All Mighty Old Folks Home at 7439-C Jalan Klebang Besar on last year Aug 18.
The charge, under Section 323 of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonment for up to a year or fine of up to RM2,000, or both, if found guilty.
The second charge was for failing to register the home, an offence under Section 5 (2) of the Care Centres Act 1993 which provides an imprisonment for up to two years, or fine of up to RM10,000, or both, if found guilty.
Magistrate Analia Kamaruddin fined Sehgar RM2,000 for causing hurt and another RM2,000 for failing to register the centre.
The prosecution was conducted by officer Nora Yaacob, while Sehgar was unrepresented.
A video clip of a caretaker abusing two elderly people at an old folks home became viral in the social media and angered many netizens calling the authorities to take action on the abuser.
The operator was arrested on Oct 5 after a former staff member Aleyany Zafiha Muktar Khalib lodged a report against the caretaker at the Batang Tiga police station, claiming that the operator had frequently hit the elder woman.
The old folks home had been closed down after the incident and the inmates had relocated to other homes by the state welfare department.
